Statistics

The Heritage Office of the Velocity Interoperability Network publishes statistics on the Register of Protected Sites, on the sites it records as at risk, and on its own activity: proposals received and decided, applications for consent received and decided, and inspections carried out. This first release records the position at establishment on 6 September 2026 and the activity of the transition period from 10 August to 5 September 2026, during which member organisations transferred their lists and interim arrangements to the Office.

The figures are drawn from the lists supplied by member organisations, from the Office's inspection records and from the register of proposals and applications kept under the interim arrangements. Figures for the transition period are provisional and will be revised in later releases where late returns are received.

Proposals for designation received under the interim arrangements

The Register by site. Every principal site of the Network has at least one protected site. Central Exchange and Southbank Terminal, the two oldest settled sites, have four entries each and between them account for both Grade I listed buildings and two of the three conservation areas.

The Register by designation. The table below sets each designation against the number of its entries recorded as at risk and the number of entries held for assessment that, if confirmed, would be added to it. Scheduled monuments are the designation most at risk: half of the six are on the Heritage at Risk Register. The seven held listed buildings are counted at Grade II, the grade at which an entry is normally first considered; the grade is settled on assessment.

Activity during the transition. Before the Office's procedures came into force, proposals and requests for consent were dealt with under interim arrangements at the principal sites. The activity recorded under those arrangements is shown below.

The rise in every series between the two halves of the period reflects the completion of the transfer of lists from member organisations and the publication of the interim arrangements. Of the twelve requests for consent received, nine were determined: seven granted, two of them subject to conditions, and two refused. The three outstanding, together with the seven proposals, have been carried into the Office's procedures with their original dates of receipt.

The Office will publish statistics quarterly. The next release, covering the quarter ending 30 September 2026, will be published in October 2026 and announced in the Newsroom. It will report for the first time on proposals and applications received under the Office's own procedures and on the progress of the survey.
